In a temple, such an effigy should allow the represented deceased to participate in the worship of the god and obtain protection and eternal life from him.
In a tomb, the statue takes place in the funeral cult, during which eternal sustenance is provided by prayer and offerings made by families and priests.
This statuary dates back to the Middle Kingdom and has a long history, so it cannot be ruled out that its function has also changed.
