Ann Macy Roth of New York University expressed skepticism to Live Science, asserting the impossibility of accurately determining the count. Moreover, she highlighted the disagreement among academics on this matter.
One significant hurdle in tallying the pyramids lies in the complex history of Egyptian territories. During the 25th dynasty, Nubian kings ruled Egypt and erected pyramids in Sudan.
Consequently, accounting for pyramids from this period remains a subject of debate among Egyptologists.
Additional challenges contribute to the difficulty of arriving at a definitive count of Egyptian pyramids.
Some of the larger pyramids were once encircled by smaller structures, like the ‘Queens’ Pyramids’, standing at approximately 20 meters in height near the renowned pyramids of Giza. However, their modest size and lesser renown relegate them to a secondary classification.
Mark Lehner, president of the Ancient Egypt Research Associates, highlighted further obstacles in determining the exact number of Egyptian pyramids. Among these challenges is the fact that some pyramids were left unfinished, complicating their inclusion in the count.
“Lehner also noted that during the New Kingdom (circa 1550 to 1070 BC), private individuals occasionally erected small pyramids within their tombs, sparking debate over whether to include these diminutive structures,” Live Science reports.
Despite the complexity, or perhaps impossibility, of definitively cataloging Egyptian pyramids, their profound cultural significance remains undeniable.
Ultimately, whether the count tallies in the tens or aligns with Wikipedia’s figure of 118, the impact of these ancient marvels endures. It comes as no surprise that, even after millennia, they persist as one of the foremost tourist attractions and historical landmarks today.
